1. The first backpack made from Ocean Impact Plastic

Every year, over nine million tons of plastic enter the oceans. The result: animals and plants lose their natural habitat and deadly traps are created. Plastic in the ocean also poses dangers to humans. Microplastics enter the natural water cycle and thus our food. With the founding of GOT BAG in 2016, the German start-up aims to take a stand against this environmental pollution and raise greater awareness for the use of existing resources.

Thus, the company launched the world's first backpack made from Ocean Impact Plastic with the vision to actively combat ocean pollution.

2. How does the plastic from the ocean get into the backpack? 

One of the epicentres of plastic pollution is in Indonesia. This is where GOT BAG started its clean-up program. A network of now over 2,000 fishers collects plastic as bycatch in their fishing nets on the north coast of Java and brings it to one of the company's several collection points. After cleaning there, the PET portion is shredded into small pellets. The remaining plastic enters the recycling chain through the intended process. This makes the Ocean Impact Plastic ready for further processing. From the raw material, step by step, a high-quality and durable yarn is produced, which forms the basic building block for the fabric used in further production. In addition, GOT BAG also collects plastic on land, from mangrove forests and rivers in the region, since the lack or absence of waste management systems repeatedly causes plastic to enter various natural areas. Collected plastics that cannot be used for the production of GOT BAG products are given by the company to other suitable recycling options.
