Which backpack is suitable for daycare and preschool?

With the backpack models "Little and Big Friends," going to daycare, preschool, and kindergarten is twice as fun! We recommend the Little Friends for children aged one to three years for daycare visits, and the Big Friends for children aged about three to six years. The carrying systems of both models ergonomically adapt to the sensitive kids' backs. The volume of the Affenzahn backpacks is designed so they don’t get overfilled and thus too heavy. The lunchbox, a small water bottle, and possibly a favorite stuffed animal fit easily into the kindergarten backpacks.

From what age are the Big Friends recommended and what makes them special?

We recommend the Big Friends from the age of three. In general, the Little and Big Friends differ in volume and size. With a capacity of eight liters, the Big Friend has twice the volume of the Little Friend. With additional compartments like a front pocket and outer pockets, keeping things organized is very easy. Besides that, the backpack impresses with its ergonomic fit. With small treasure compartments or the Velcro paws, fun comes first alongside functionality. The kindergarten day is easily managed with the Big Friend. The consumer magazine awarded the Big Friend a "Very Good" rating in their eco-test.

How heavy are the kindergarten backpacks?

The backpacks from the series Big Friends weigh 420 grams and those from the series Little Friends 200 grams.

What is the best way to clean the Affenzahn backpacks?

The kids' backpacks are made from dirt- and water-repellent materials. The manufacturer recommends cleaning with 40°C warm water in the form of a hand wash and if necessary, with a mild detergent. Machine washing is discouraged because the backpacks repel water so strongly that the water would simply flow past the dirty spots in the washing machine.

What materials are used for the backpacks?

For the production of the backpacks, Affenzahn uses fabrics made of 50% recycled PET bottles. For each Big Friend, six PET bottles (0.5l) are reused, and for the Little Friend, three. As a bluesign® partner, Affenzahn also ensures that no harmful chemicals are used throughout the entire production process.

How sustainable are the kindergarten backpacks from Affenzahn?

Through the recycling process, Affenzahn uses 20% less wastewater compared to common production methods, energy consumption decreases by 50%, and pollutant emissions by 60%. Additionally, Affenzahn is a member of the Fair Wear Foundation. This organization monitors the entire production chain to ensure that all human rights are respected and that fair working conditions prevail for the workers on site.

Find the right size

It is well known that kids' feet grow quickly. This makes wearing the right shoe size at all times even more important. Only this way can you prevent permanent deformities and joint problems, as children's bones and cartilage are still particularly soft at a young age. Shoes that are too large also quickly lead to problems, such as insufficient support in the shoe or cramped toes. 

Use these to find the size for Affenzahn shoes Printable templates. Always measure both feet from the longest toe to the heel, as differently sized feet are not unusual. Also, allow an additional 1.2 centimeters of room for movement in the shoe for the total foot length.

Why don’t kids' shoes need special cushioning?

Affenzahn developed the shoes with a very thin sole. This allows the child's foot to balance itself and build strong foot muscles. At the same time, the sole still protects against sharp stones, moisture, and cold.

A thick shoe sole causes children to perceive the ground less consciously and become more reckless faster. For example, they like to jump from greater heights because a thicker sole downplays the sensation upon landing.

The assumption that parents prefer thicker soles for young children results from adults themselves, who like to walk on thicker and softer soles.

There are no problems or pain with the special Affenzahn shoe sole. Your child simply perceives the ground more consciously and becomes more careful when playing and climbing. There is also no adjustment period needed when switching to a thinner sole.

What materials are the kids' shoes made of?

The upper and lining material consists of 100% organic cotton. This uses up to 91% less water in production than conventional cotton.

The special insole is made of 30% algae foam from BLOOM™. BLOOM™ pioneered the first algae-infused EVA foam in the shoe industry.
